The Brief

A Refined and Welcoming Workplace

Urban Fitouts delivered a complete tenancy transformation for Desert City, creating a contemporary open-plan spec suite that balances sophisticated design with everyday functionality. The brief was to create a welcoming, collaborative environment that staff would enjoy working in and clients would feel excited to visit.

The previous layout was highly segregated, with undersized offices, an oversized boardroom and server rooms that disrupted circulation and limited flexibility. The new design reimagines the space with a more considered layout, improved flow and a variety of spaces to support focused work, informal meetings and collaboration.

Design Direction

Earthy Tones and Natural Textures

The design softens the existing environment through a warm, earthy palette inspired by desert landscapes. Timber-look finishes, textured surfaces and muted sand tones create a cohesive foundation, complemented by the client's signature mustard and rust colours.

Soft timber furniture and joinery bring warmth throughout the tenancy, while terracotta feature walls and desert-inspired carpet introduce depth, texture and visual interest. Deep burgundy accents provide contrast, adding sophistication and drawing attention to key architectural elements.

Together, these finishes create an elevated yet approachable workplace that reflects the client's brand identity without overwhelming the interior.

A Warm & Welcoming Entry

The front-of-house area features soft mustard upholstered ottoman seating set against frosted fluted glass, creating a welcoming first impression while maintaining a sense of privacy. Timber cabinetry and stone-look vinyl flooring introduce warmth and texture, complementing the earthy design palette. These finishes continue along the hallway, where feature wall paint and timber cabinetry extend into the back-of-house areas, creating visual continuity and a cohesive connection between the front and rear of the tenancy. Together, these elements enhance the sense of openness and create a more seamless flow throughout the space.

Expansive Kitchen Spaces

The project included an upgrade to both the ground-floor kitchen and the Level 1 kitchenette, improving functionality and providing convenient spaces for staff across both levels. The updated facilities complement the overall design through warm timber finishes and an earthy colour palette, creating practical, cohesive spaces that support everyday use and staff connection.

Contemporary Finishes and Thoughtful Details

A restrained palette of soft whites, textured greys, warm timber and charcoal accents establishes a consistent design language throughout the tenancy. The neutral foundation creates a bright, uncluttered environment, while contrasting materials introduce depth and visual interest without overwhelming the spaces.

The reception area establishes the tone upon entry, with a white reception desk featuring detailed panelling that creates a distinctive focal point within the space. Positioned to be immediately visible upon entering, the desk introduces texture and architectural interest while maintaining the clean, refined aesthetic carried throughout the fit-out. In the waiting area, navy upholstered seating adds a deeper colour accent, complemented by understated furnishings and grey carpet to create a comfortable setting for visitors.

Throughout the tenancy, warm timber meeting tables soften the cooler neutral finishes, while black-framed glazing introduces definition and contrast. Vertical wall panelling adds texture to selected areas, reinforcing the contemporary aesthetic while contributing to a more considered and layered interior. Together, these finishes create a cohesive environment that balances professional presentation with warmth and practicality.

Refined Materials and Acoustic Comfort

The boardroom combines a generous timber meeting table with rich brown upholstered chairs and patterned carpet in warm, desert-inspired tones. Textured wall finishes and a neutral palette establish a calm, considered setting for meetings and client presentations.

Acoustic wall panels enhance the room's functionality by helping manage sound, while their materiality contributes to the overall design aesthetic. The result is a professional meeting environment that feels refined and comfortable, with warmth and texture replacing the starkness of a conventional corporate boardroom.

Informal Meeting Spaces: Connecting People and Places

Informal meeting areas provide flexible spaces for quick discussions, collaborative sessions and quieter moments away from the main workstations. A round timber table, sculptural pendant lighting and warm upholstered seating create an inviting setting, complemented by integrated planter boxes featuring desert-inspired greenery.

Glazed partitions maintain visual connections between the spaces, allowing the design to feel open and connected while retaining distinct areas for different activities. A large mural within the garage space adds a striking visual feature, visible through the upper-level glazing and creating a distinctive connection between the building's different levels.

Functionality and Staff Wellbeing

Beyond the visual transformation, the new layout prioritises flexibility, circulation and the everyday needs of the team. Modern workstations provide a streamlined and functional foundation for individual work, while the expanded kitchen and breakout area, informal meeting spaces and lounge settings offer a variety of opportunities for staff to connect and collaborate.

Natural light is maximised around the entry and waiting area, as well as the upper-level offices. A combination of downlights and decorative feature lighting provides additional illumination, while considered material selections and acoustic treatments contribute to a more comfortable working environment.

Greenery, including desert-inspired cacti and aloe-style plants, reinforces the natural design direction and introduces a subtle connection to the landscape.

The Result

A Warm, Earthy Workplace Designed for Connection

The completed tenancy delivers a sophisticated, welcoming workplace that balances the Desert City's brand identity with the practical needs of a modern working environment. A considered earthy palette of warm timber, terracotta, sandy neutrals and deep burgundy brings consistency throughout the space, creating a cohesive design that feels both contemporary and inviting.

The reconfigured layout improves circulation and makes better use of the available floor area, replacing the previous fragmented arrangement with a more open and connected environment. A variety of work settings, including modern workstations, dedicated meeting rooms, informal collaboration areas and comfortable breakout spaces, provides staff with greater flexibility throughout the day.

Upgrades to the ground-floor kitchen and Level 1 kitchenette further enhance the functionality of the tenancy, while thoughtful material selections and acoustic treatments support comfort and usability. Natural light, layered lighting, textured finishes and integrated greenery add warmth and depth, creating an environment that feels considered without compromising on performance.

The result is a refined and functional workplace that supports productivity, encourages collaboration and creates a positive experience for both staff and visiting clients. Through the integration of improved spatial planning, cohesive finishes and purposeful design details, Urban Fitouts has transformed the tenancy into a welcoming space that reflects Desert City's identity and supports the way their team works.
